When to use GIF , JPEG & PNG
Digital images fill up your inboxes , take up computer memory and take time to load on web pages. When working with digital image files there are certain file types to use for each circumstances
GIF
Graphic Interchange Format pronounced as "gif" introduced by CompuServe in 1987 to transfer image quickly across slow connection.
It uses 256 indexed color and uses dithering a process where two pixel color combine to make one to reduce to number of color needed. Fewer color means file even start smaller than JPEG.

GIF images are compressed using the loss-less data compression technique to reduce the file size without degrading the visual quality. This compression does not lose any data. It has a interlaced progressive loading quality, first it show low quality but later it added with better quality.
It mainly use in animation and low resolution film clips. It also uses for small icons and web graphic with few colors. It also shows best usage in line drawing ,Single color border and cartoon.
And most importantly its saves to extension .gif.
JPEG
Joint Photographic Expert Group pronounced as "jay-peg" designed by the group in 1986 when small file size is more important than its maximum quality.
JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality. It uses 16 bit data format and display millions of color. It uses very complex compression algorithm and 60-70% compression is usually optimal for website image.

Tools like JPEG mini compress photo up to 5 times without losing quality. Firstly image details "forgotten" and then filled in when displayed. And called lossy compression for loss data.
It is the standard file format for digital cameras. Reduces the file size up to 15% more without losing quality. Useful for web pages specially, Facebook for faster upload.
It saves with the extension jpeg/jpg.
PNG
It also uses lossless data compression , so no data loss. PNG- 8 is very similar to GIF , it has 256 color and 1 bit transparency and also PNG 8 are even smaller than GIF files. PNG -24 is very similar to JPEG , it can include over 16 millions colors and also lossless compression means larger files than JPEG.
Its best usage is on webpages such as logos that involve transparency and fading . It used also when the image is in the middle of the editing process.
It saves with the extension .png
